30 Dec 2008 Matt sticks a quarter up his nose…on video.

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas. I did!

While I was back in South Carolina, I had a great time getting to hang out with my friend Matt. He works for Intervarsity at UNC-Wilmington (That’s in Wilmington, North Carolina, in case you were wondering), so I don’t see him very often.

But we stay in touch.

One night Matt, Lyndsay and I went out for coffee and had a great time catching up. As usual, conversations ranged from serious to goofy. When things turned goofy, I pulled my camera out.

One of Matt’s best “Stupid Human Tricks” is that he can put a quarter up each of his nostrils. Sure, it isn’t quite the same as swallowing a sword, but it is mildly impressive. …and he enjoys it, so he’s always up for an opportunity.

Before I could get my camera on, he already got the quarters in his nose. But the discussion that ensued with Lyndsay was hilarious. Check out this video. (You might need to turn your volume up so you can hear the dialogue)

And for fun…in widescreen:

Look at this picture. Apparently I can time travel.

21 Dec 2008 Havent Gotten Me A Christmas Present Yet?

Here’s another great opportunity.

As you might remember, I’m going to give this Christmas away. Instead of presents, I’ve asked for contributions to World Vision for relief around the world…things like A Goat, A Brood of Chicks, and A Month of Loving Care for an Orphan. It is some really cool stuff.

There’s another great organization that I also want to support. My friend Emery has introduced me to Integrity International, a missions organization that is doing some really cool things around the world. In addition to the routine mission work they do, they also are employing local people in the communities they are serving in Africa, so that the communities change from within rather than change because some Americans showed up and started giving away handouts.

They too have a program where you can give a gift on someone’s behalf…and if you haven’t gotten me a present yet, I’d love to support these folks also. Here are some choices:

20 Dec 2008 Territory Marked

Yesterday my friend Jarrod Jones came up to visit and come to our company Christmas party. He brought his wonderful wife, 2 sons, and even his dog Tidbit! Lyndsay and I were very excited to get to host the whole group and visit with them–they’re terrific folks.

Tidbit got right in the door and reclaimed the house…which must have still had some scent of Alvin or something…it was really more funny than anything else…and I already had everything I needed to clean it up!

Here’s a picture of Tidbit:

16 Dec 2008 Some Christmas Cheer

Today I saw a glimpse of me, my marriage, and my life in 30 years. The kids are off at college, I’m bored, and Lyndsay is stringing Christmas lights and listening to Mariah Carey’s “Merry Christmas CD” My overacheiving nerdiness kicks in and I think the picture would look something like this:

10 Dec 2008 My friends are the best friends

So as you probably saw in the last post, I wrote an article and got it published on Chris Pirillo’s website, a respected internet tech blog. I’ve never written anything and seen it on someone else’s blog before, so it was particularly exciting. (well, besides the time I got quoted by the British news publication)

After writing the article and seeing that I got 25 comments, I was pretty proud of myself. Not because I was anywhere close to winning…no, I was probably 75 comments away from even being a contender…but because I was in the top 10% or so of entries, and for my first time I thought that was pretty good.

I read over the comments and they were fantastic! Everyone contributed some great stuff. From other Christmas tunes that would make great additions to my iPod, to a video of Charlie Brown’s “A Heavy Metal Christmas” that was absolutely hilarious. It was a great conversation.

So at first I pat myself on the back…”Way to go, Scott…you wrote something that people would want to read and comment on. Look at the great discussion that was facilitated there. Good Job.”

But then I read over the folks that contributed all these comments…and…it was you guys! I was surprised to realize that I knew probably 90 to 95% of people there, either as friends…or even a couple “friend of friends.”

It kinda felt like I showed up with all my friends, walked into a stranger’s house, had a conversation, and then we all walked out. I’m pretty sure I could have blogged about something as un-interesting as an IRS tax form and it would have been as well received. Why? Not because of me or my writing…no, just because of you all being the fantastic friends and generally awesome people.

So anyway, I just wanted to write a quick blurb here and let you know that though I didn’t win any contests with my entry, I did learn a valuable lesson: That my friends are the best.

(And you all have great taste in music!)

01 Dec 2008 The Best Orthopedic Hand Surgeon In Nashville

The subject of today’s post is my personal favorite doctor in Middle Tennessee, who I believe is the best orthopedic finger/hand/elbow/shoulder surgeon in Nashville. His name is Dr. Jason Haslam. And he is awesome.

In the event that you’re looking for a doctor in Nashville, Tennessee that is an orthopedic surgeon AND specializes in upper-extremity care (including cubital tunnel and carpal tunnel surgery, and tennis elbow surgery), Dr. Haslam is your man. He is very skilled, he is very kind, he cares about the patient.

I have sent two of my co-workers and my father-in-law to him, and they all have come back with excellent reviews. And they’re not the only ones. Healthgrades.com, an independent review source, gives him great marks as well, based on customer feedback and their own grading system. He has a lot of skills and accomplishments that really don’t mean much to me because I’m not a medical person, but you can read about all that on the Premier Orthopaedics website. You can also read a bio about him.

So if you’re in or around Nashville and you need hand surgery (or for that matter, arm surgery, shoulder surgery, wrist surgery, or elbow surgery), you should make an appointment with Dr. Jason Haslam today. His office number is (615) 342-6300.

28 Nov 2008 Black Friday Hoopla

Lyndsay wanted to go to the mall for Black Friday. I reluctantly agreed. We got to the mall and stood in Dillard’s for about 30 seconds and Lyndsay realized a universal truth that I could have said directly to her a thousand times and she never would have believed:

Self-respecting men don’t go to the mall on Black Friday.

We don’t do it. Best Buy/Circuit City, maybe. But definitely not the mall. The ratio of women to men was about 300:1, and the ratio of men lacking self respect to those who had it was 300:0.

So now I’m at home, trying to answer the real black friday questions: Where I can I watch some football? And what’s for lunch?

25 Nov 2008 My Christmas List

Normally about this time of year I release a Christmas list for my family. In my typical over achieving style, this is usually a list with pictures, links, model numbers, and often stores with the best price and dates to find things on sale. Since I’ve determined that my family is probably about 90% of people who read this blog, I figured I’d post my list here. That way it’d be in an easy place for all of my family to find…

In recent years while having the “so what’d you get for Christmas?” conversation with friends, I’ve heard a couple of them mention that they gave their Christmas away. Usually this means that they took all the money they were going to spend on each other or have spent on them, and they used it to provide Christmas for an underprivileged family, either local or abroad.

I usually leave these conversations feeling a bit awkward. Obviously I know that what this friend did by giving their Christmas away is awesome…but…how could I do that? How could I give away the money/iPod/digital camera that I just got for Christmas?

But this year, I’ve decided to go for it. I’m SO blessed, and I want to take this Christmas as an opportunity to live out some of the stuff Jesus talked about…and be a little less like a discontent materialistic American.

So here’s what I’ve decided. There are programs online where you can donate money to buy animals for families in impoverished countries. I think this is really neat.

You can see the whole catalog here

And here are a few of my favorites:

A Goat - $70

A Brood of Chicks - $25

There are lots of other options. Here are some other favorites:

Vocational Training - $120

Give an Orphan a Month of Loving Care - $35

When you check out, they’ll send you an “Honor Card” that even gives you something to wrap up and give the day of Christmas, letting the me (or whoever else you decide to give for) know about the gift!

DISCLAIMER: I did some checking around before jumping into this. I learned that just because you click “Buy a Goat” and check out, that doesn’t mean that someone, somewhere will necessarily get a goat…and I’m okay with that. I’ve worked for a ministry and I know that there are marketing and administrative costs involved in anything like this.

So why Samaritan’s Purse? After all, Heifer.org, Oxfam, and World Vision are doing the same thing. First, because they’re a Christian Organization (I know that World Vision is too). I like that Samaritan’s Purse comes right out and says that their mission is to “meet needs of people…with the purpose of sharing God’s love through His Son, Jesus Christ.” That is what it’s all about here, folks.

Also, when I checked into their stats, I noticed that Heifer only spends 75%, Oxfam only spends 80%, and World Vision spends 87% on the actual projects, respectively. The rest goes to marketing and administration. Samaritan’s Purse puts 89% towards ministry. I like that. If up to 14 extra cents of every dollar are going directly to the cause, then that’s good enough for me.

Lyndsay has given me a couple of eyerolls over this idea, but I’m totally serious about this. If you’ve already gotten me something for Christmas, I appreciate the thought but please–return it if you can. Or give me a gift receipt with it.

I’m really excited about this Christmas. I hope you are too. Merry Christmas!
