16 Nov 2008 Is my wife weird Chapter 2

A while ago I blogged about Lyndsay’s dislike for feet and how little sense it made to me. Kaye, my friend from Samford pulled out some disgusting story from childhood about how she doesn’t like feet and wondered if it might be a traumatic childhood experience. Sara, my friend from high school pointed out that she personally doesn’t like toes and wondered if that might be the case with Lyndsay as well. When I asked Lyndsay about the issue shortly after getting all this feedback, she actually listed both of those reasons as the two reasons that she did not like feet.

In this, I learned two things. First, that I’m incapable of understanding and/or sympathizing with my wife on some issues. Second, that the internet/blog/facebook is actually a wonderful way to gain insight and perspective from friends when I need a little dose of it.

So. Here’s the new one. Today Lyndsay was putting out Christmas decorations (yes, I know it’s only November 16…but this is not even part of the question), which included 3 holiday soap dispensers, one in each of our bathrooms. She set each empty Christmas dispenser next to the usual soap dispenser on the sink. I asked her if she wanted me to dump the regular soap in, or if she had her own soap for these Christmas dispensers.

She replied, “No, I wouldn’t want to ruin them (the Christmas soap dispensers) by putting soap in them.”

This sentence makes no sense to me. What would the purpose be, if not to hold soap? One of us is crazy. Please advise.

05 Aug 2008 Weekend Getaway to Dallas

We got to see Chris and Sallie!

A couple weeks ago Lyndsay and I had a few days off work and we decided to take advantage of them and take a spontaneous weekend getaway. We found an amazing price on a last minute flight, a good deal on a hotel and rental car…and off we went (with all of about 2 days planning). While in Dallas we saw the JFK museum, Six Flags, and we even got to go to this outdoor festival called “Taste of Dallas” where the local restaurants lined up along the street and sold food.

And the best part of all was that we got to visit with our friends Chris and Sallie Thomas! We had a great time driving around Dallas with them…and enjoying what Mexican food is SUPPOSED to taste like, apparently.

Dallas is a pretty neat city. I give them a D- for their roads (highways don’t have exit numbers) and intersections (they put all their stoplights downtown on the side of the street). and I give them an A+ for their food (amazing mexican) and an A for their rollercoasters (the Titan at Six Flags put a hurt on me that I can’t even begin to explain).

22 Jul 2008 Why don’t you like feet?

Lyndsay, my lovely wife, doesn’t like feet. And by “doesn’t like,” I mean “despises and is repulsed by.” I don’t understand why. I spent some time thinking about it today…and the more I think about it, the less it makes sense.

First…she’s a nurse. She tells stories about people bringing her their fingers in a bag. And she laughs while she tells them. It’s disgusting! But how different are messed up hands and messed up feet? I don’t see much of a difference. Especially not enough of a difference where it is okay to laughingly recall memories of detached fingers while not wanting to be within three yards of a perfectly healthy foot.

Putting the nurse thing aside, I know that she’s not the only person on earth with this “foot-phobia.” I’ve met other people before who echo her ill will towards feet. She is not alone.

But here is the greatest mystery of all: She has no aversion whatsover to the ground. She walks on it. I’ve seen her bend over and touch it every now and then. I’ve even seen her sit on it. Once I even watched her roll down a big grassy hill inside Samford’s football stadium (though that was mostly because the cardboard box she was attempting to ride stuck to the ground at the top and catapulted her forward).

So let’s recap: Okay with the ground…okay with people, above the ankle…what is wrong with feet?

21 May 2008 No More Shrimp, Please.

I love seafood. Doesn’t matter how cheap and terrible it is. I like it. Since getting married, I haven’t had much seafood because Lyndsay doesn’t really care for it too much. And that’s fine. Since we got married, she hasn’t had much cabbage because I don’t really care for it too much. So we’re even. Right?

Recently Lyndsay learned that she actually liked shrimp. We went to one of her coworkers’ houses for a “Crawfish Boil” and had some great shrimp there…and then we went on the cruise where they had shrimp on tap…and over the last three weeks Lyndsay has had shrimp about 5 times and enjoyed it every time.

So last night we got some shrimp from Kroger and decided to have it for dinner. Lyndsay cooked them up in some sauce with pasta and it was terrific.

About 1 hour later…she started itching really badly and had some bumps break out in various spots around her body…couple on her arms, big ones behind each of her ears, on her legs, etc. We didn’t really know what to think about it…

Until about an hour after that, when she suddenly doubled over in excruciating lower abdomen pain. After about 30 minutes of her rolling around in pain but not letting me do anything about it, she finally gave in and I rushed her to the ER. They pumped her full of medicine, examined her, and came to a conclusion.

Lyndsay is apparently allergic to the iodine found in shrimp. The reaction went away. She left the ER feeling really drowsy and tired (it was about 12:30 when we got out of there), but completely pain free. And she woke up this morning exhausted, but not in any kind of pain. So we’re over it now.

But…no more shrimp, please.
